You're Doing Your Makeup Wrong

I wouldn't say I'm a makeup expert.. in fact I'd say I'm quite the opposite, and I still have quite a few things to learn about makeup and beauty in general. However, I have made my fair share of makeup mistakes in the past which I am not proud of - I feel like we can all look back on past looks and have a bit of a cringe attack.. But I like to think of these mistakes as little learning curves that help us to grow into the beauty gurus we all hope to be! So I thought I would write a post on some of these makeup mistakes that I see people making so often because I feel like sometimes we can fall into a bit of a routine with our makeup - and sometimes this routine isn't always the right way to do things! So, maybe you might learn a thing or two?

WEARING MAKEUP IN THE SHOWER

This is something that I have done many a time in the past.. you've put on your makeup for the day then realised that you really need a shower, so you get in the shower and go about you business.. right? This is a big mistake! When you shower, the stream from the heat of the water opens up your pores, if you have makeup on you foundation and powder will all get into these pores and this is how you end up with blackheads and spots.. not good! Taking off your makeup before you get in the shower is so much more beneficial for your skin - you pores will open up and you can give you face a good scrub which will help to clean out all of your clogged pores! That way you can be all squeaky clean and fresh faced!

THE ART OF CONCEALER

Putting on your concealer may seem easy - just slap it under your eyes to cover the dark circles and you're done right?! Wrong! This is something that I've learned recently actually and I might go as far as to say it has changed my life.. (I live a sad life..!) The best way of applying your concealer is to actually apply it in a triangle underneath your eye, this will help to give your eye a gorgeous lift that will make you look like you actually had a decent amount of sleep!
*Another tip that will help to enhance this lift is to use a concealer that's a shade lighter than the concealer you would use for the rest of your face.

TESTING YOUR COLOUR

When you go into the drugstore and buy a new foundation you actually shouldn't test the colour on your wrist or hand, you should instead test it on your neck! In fact, testing on your hand is a huge no-no! For a lot of us, our hands aren't the same colour as our face so the best places to test are your neck and jawline.

OVER POWDERING

As someone who suffers from oily skin I am a huge culprit of this one.. whenever I powder I must admit I go a little overboard. Truthfully, when I powder I tend to powder ever area of my face extensively, purely because I feel like it will make my makeup stay put for longer. But this can make your face look way too matte, and really you want your face to look dewy (a balance between oily and matte) The best way to do this is to dust the powder lightly on your chin and 'T zone' only!

There you have it, I hope you enjoyed these makeup tips. I've now realised that a lot of these are face makeup mistakes, so maybe I will do a part 2 with eyes and lips, if you enjoyed this one? Let me know in the comments or on twitter (@jemmasimplelife)

  1. Haha, I always pick at my mascara in the shower. Such a terrible habit, I came out looking like a panda. It's so nice being able to pick small tips up from other fellow bloggers along the way!

  2. I'm happy that I knew most of these things! When I learned that concealer works better when you apply it in a triangle my life changed haha. And I used to wash my make up in my shower and over powder, but well, you make mistakes and you learn with make up right? haha. Great post!

  4. I'm happy to say that I haven't done any of these mistakes. It may have a lot to do with the fact that I don't wear makeup much, haha. But it's a great post to remind others of the mistakes they may do everyday! :)

  5. OMG How have I never realized that me wearing make-up in the shower would do that. Like duh Rai steam opens up pores. I literally steam a clean face every now and then for a good wash. SO why would I choose to wear make-up and do it!! haha Thank you for that tip!

  7. I hate having my make up on in the shower so I'm glad that I now have a reason to obsessively take it off beforehand! I did definitely used to be an over powderer though!
