Hair Saviours | feat. John Frieda

If you follow me on Twitter you will know that around a month ago I made a drastic change with my hair! (by the way, if you're not following me yet you should - @jemmasimplelife *shameless plug*) I've always had super long, brunette hair and the most I've ever really done to it was get it permed (yeah I know..) when I was 11. But I was long loooong overdue a trim, so I decided to make a huge change and actually get my hair highlighted bleach blonde and cut into a lob!! Obviously because my hair was already so dark it came out an ashy blonde shade, however, this is such a big change for me - not only with the colour but also the length!! When I first got it done I was a bit critical, I think since it was such a big difference and I was so used to my long hair, but now I am starting to like it a bit more and I don't just stick it up in a messy bun 24/7 like I used to! I still am not overly happy about the length and I think I want it to grow out a little more since a lob doesn't completely suit me, but I am glad I got it cut, since my split ends were getting a bit out of hand and now my hair feels super healthy again!

My hair is a total virgin (?) when it comes to hair dye and bleach, the only dyes I have ever used are those temporary ones that wash out and I've only ever gone a dark berry colour and a dark purple. I can definitely tell that my hair is starting to suffer and go quite dry on the ends because of the bleach dying it out, so I made a little trip to Superdrug and picked up some little John Frieda hair care saviours that I wanted to share with you guys. Even if you aren't planning on dying your hair John Frieda has always been a huge favourite of mine when it comes to hair care, all the products are completely affordable but really do work wonders on your hair - salon results, definitely not salon prices!!

SHEER BLONDE HIGHLIGHT ACTIVATING SHAMPOO // The first thing I picked up was a shampoo, this is the highlight activating shampoo that claims to smooth hair as it gently removes darkening and dulling build-up. From what I've read in other reviews, basically what this does is get's rid of every day dirt that would darken or dim the highlights in your hair, which is something that I had never really considered before but it makes complete sense to me now! I've used this product a few times and I really do love it - it lives up to it's promises and really does give off a noticeable sheen and lightening effect on my hair. One thing I've always loved about John Frieda is it's smell, this one in particular has honey and oatmeal in which you can really notice in the scent - it's quite rich which I really do like and it leaves your hair smelling so fresh and clean! This product also does such a good job when it comes to mosturising, although I do use it alongside a conditioner obviously, but I'll get onto that in a moment! Overall I really do love this shampoo, I feel like anyone with blonde hair, either natural or dyed, would really benefit from this product since it shows noticeable results and really does brighten your hair!

SHEER BLONDE TONE-CORRECTING CONDITIONER // I also picked up this conditioner, since I had been starting to notice a few patches of brassiness in my hair - my hairdresser had recommended any purple toning shampoo to combat this. This John Frieda toning shampoo claims to neutralise brassiness and restore moisture and softness to renew colour, which is pretty much exactly what I'm looking for! I've used this conditioner a few times now and the brassiness has dimmed a little, but it's still not back to the blonde colour that it should be - I am half tempted to also buy the shampoo that goes with the conditioner and obviously use it a few more times to see if the results are any better! The smell with this one is also gorgeous, I believe this has lavender in which makes the scent even nicer. Overall, I am quite pleased with this conditioner, it does a good job at mosturising my hair and leaves it feeling silky smooth - however, I will be testing it further to see if the brassiness improves! Also, what I will say is, make sure you wash this product out thoroughly, because I find it tends to cling to my roots (?) a lot more than usual conditioner which can leave your hair looking and feeling a bit greasy.

KELP HELP DEEP CONDITIONING MASQUE // I also picked up a hair masque since I wanted something that would really deep condition my hair to give it the moisture that it truly deserves - I opted for Kelp Help since it claims to 'quench parched strands' which is definitely something that I need to do! The product says you should leave the masque on for around 3-5 minutes and then rinse  thoroughly. However, recently I have been leaving the product on for 30 minutes to an hour in order to give my hair a proper deep condition! This method really does leave my hair feeling super soft and fresh and no longer dry. From what I've read from other reviews Kelp Help features a strengthening formula which will hopefully combat the split ends I am so prone to getting! The only thing I will say about this product is that I am not a huge fan of the scent, it's quite minty to me which I am not the hugest fan of (I believe it's actually got hint of mint and citrus) it's supposed to be a summery scent which I have to agree with.. but a nice summery scent? I'm not so sure! However, after using this product a fair few times I can definitely see the results and my hair has never felt more nurtured by a product! I'll just have to hold my nose...
UPDATE: Just had an epiphany while using this!! I know what it smells like! It smells like the stuff they used to take moulds for your retainers - anyone who has ever had braces will know what I mean! It's not a particularly pleasant smell and I can't say it holds the best memories!!

Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this post! I don't think I've ever done a hair care type post, so I hope I did a good job! Let me know in the comments if you've ever used any of these products and I'd also love to know what is the craziest thing you have ever done with your hair!? Thanks so much for reading!

  1. I once tried the "Go blonder" shampoo from John Frieda and I got a horrible rash from it but everybody else seemed to be loving it. I don't know if I was allergic to something in it but I haven't dared to try another John Frieda product after that. The deep conditioning masque sounds interesting though. My hair is so dull and dry now that I've gone blonde. I might try it out, only with a tiny bit first to see if I get a reaction.

    1. I've never tried that one, but might give it a go since my hair is bound to fade! It's a shame you got a rash from the products - that would put me off John Frieda too!! That sounds like a good plan though, hopefully you were only allergic to whatever was in the go blonder version!! x
