The Things That Actually Make Me Feel Better

I get stressed a lot so it's not surprise that I've done plenty of 'ways to make yourself feel better' posts (or something along those lines - you know the ones!) since I started blogging. But today I decided to do more of a real post sharing some of the things that actually make me feel better when I'm feeling down, because obviously there are the 'best' ways to self care that are a bit more generic but there's also the 'real' ways that we can probably all relate to more and these real ways are the things that I personally find really helpful when I'm not feeling too great. Obviously as you can tell by one of my recent posts I haven't been feeling 100% recently so a lot of these things have been helping me out at the moment and I hope these will be helpful to anyone who's also not feeling too amazing right now! But also remember that whatever is making you feel low will pass and you will survive, I promise.. that's something I need to remind myself of too sometimes. Feel free to share your own ways of making yourself feel better in the comment below - I would love to know if anyone has any really different ways of making themselves feel better, also let me know if you can relate to any of my ideas!

RETAIL THERAPY // Although my bank balance wouldn't see this as necessarily a good thing, I can't deny that shopping does genuinely make me feel better. This came to my attention recently when I went into town by myself one day and when Ethan came to pick me up he said something along the lines of 'I haven't seen you this happy in ages!' I hadn't even bought much, just a book and some flowers, but just being out and spending a bit of money on myself apparently changes my mood quite a lot. Also I can't even explain how happy I get when an online order arrives... definitely a pick-me-up!

HAVING A LUSH STOCKPILE // That little metal pot in the picture above sits on my vanity table in our bedroom and honestly my mood does tend to change depending on how stocked up it is... is that weird...? (You can imagine how happy I am right now to have this many, haha!) This one kind of goes hand-in-hand with the shopping one because when I shop I tend to make a sneaky detour into lush and stock up.. it keeps me happy apparently.. that's a good enough excuse right?!

A BATH // A bath helps me feel better whatever I'm feeling bad about really. I could literally be feeling slightly under the weather because we ran out of pringles or I could be sobbing from a terrible day where everything seemed to go wrong and I'll just hop in the bath and instantly feel better. I feel like a bath is just the perfect distraction for me, especially when it comes to pressure to get responsibilities done. You know when you just have so much to do and you need a little break, well if I try and force myself to have a break I literally can't sit still for five minutes and I'm just constantly thinking about all the things I need to do - so if I have a bath I know I have around 30-45 minutes where I can just enjoy being away from all the stress and responsibilities, I'm not expected to do anything and I can actually relax, it's great! (Does mean I end up in the bath hiding from my responsibilities a lot though... )

A CUP OF COFFEE // When I'm feeling particularly stressed, a cup of coffee does the trick. Especially when it comes to uni work, I find myself thinking 'I'll go and get a coffee and work out my game plan' then with my coffee I'll sit and sort out my schedule and work out what I need to do for the day. I don't know what it is but I feel like I can't start sorting out my stress until I have a cup of coffee at hand, haha! Coffee also does the trick when I'm feeling low, I suppose its quite a comforting thing and I've always loved coffee - so what's a better treat than that when I'm feeling down?

BLOGGING // I'm very lucky in that blogging has become one of my favourite hobbies, it means that I can create loads of content and grow my blog more and more but also it works as something that really makes me happy. I love blogging when I'm feeling a bit rubbish because either it just takes my mind off things and I can write about more happy things like a Lush haul or struggles we can all relate to, or I can put my anxious/sad thoughts into a post and get everything off my chest - which makes me feel so much better afterwards. I've also seriously been loving Bloglovin recently by the way - I love making really cute collections of peoples blog posts, it all looks so pretty and is just what I need as a good distraction! If you want to give me a cheeky follow that would make me so happy and I'll probably give you a cheeky follow back, haha! (Here's my link!

DISTRACTIONS // For the smaller bad days like when I'm just feeling a little anxious or I've just received some bad news immediate distractions tend to work best for me. Just stick on some Prison Break, a film on Netflix, a YouTube video, a good book all wrapped up in a blanket and I'll instantly feel a little better. Sometimes all you need is just a distraction from whatever is making you feel low to feel a little better at least for a little while.

TIDYING THE HOUSE // One thing I can definitely say is that my house is ALWAYS tidy because I genuinely just tidy all the time - that's because it's one thing that I like to do when I'm stressed or down, oh god this has gone a bit dark, haha I'm not sad all the time I promise! I don't really enjoying the 'tidying' part it's more the bit afterwards when I can fall down on the sofa and look at the tidy room, it's like a huge weight is lifted off my shoulders and I can then tackle the actual issues that are stressing me out or making me upset.

A WALK // I'm like a dog with how much I like to walk but just being outside and going for a walk with Ethan does wonders when I'm feeling down. I love just having a chat free of distractions and it can either take my mind off of what I'm feeling down/ stressed about or be a good opportunity to talk it through and then feel much better about it afterwards.

FRIENDS AND FAMILY // Although when I'm feeling down the last thing I usually want to do is talk to people and have to socialise (especially with people who may not understand or know the ins and outs of why I'm having a particularly bad day/week/month) it can really help to force me into a happier mindset and make more of an effort to feel better, rather than moping with myself - as much as I want to just lie on my bed and listen to Adele.

SAD MUSIC // Okay, sometimes I do allow myself to just mope and listen to Adele and that can really help me too! I actually have a playlist of sad songs on my Spotify that I like to listen to when I'm feeling down (as cringey as that sounds!) and it actually really helps to just get the feelings out, get the tears out and just mope a little bit. I always feel better after a bit of a James Bay singalong to be honest, haha!

HUGS // Do I even need to explain?! A hug always makes me feel better, especially from Ethan.. it releases endorphin or something science-y like that... I don't know, but it helps okay, haha! If I'm feeling particularly stressed a hug normally also leads to a cry and then a huge chat, which also really helps to sort things out, so that's always good!

  2. I so agree with this! If I have a tidy room and a cup of coffee in my hand, I'm feeling better already. Blogging is a great idea :) I find it nice to be able to turn a bad day into a post if I need to, or just write to feel better. Great post!

  4. Going on walks definitely always helps, breathing in the fresh air is one of the best feelings :) It's the same for me with blogging or just writing in general too, formulating my thoughts and letting them out somehow is quite liberating to me x
